Serendipity

I posted this photo at Scrapbook Bytes, as part of the Photography Challenge to capture moving water. I walk on my lunch breaks and often enjoy stopping near this little waterfall and looking out over the marinas on the False Creek inlet. This is one of my favourite places to walk, meditate, clear my mind, and just enjoy the boats and the water.

About a year and a half ago I was forced out of my comfortable little world, where I lived only 5 minutes from work, to having to commute to Vancouver every day by train and bus. I had to change my attitude about how I use my time. I realized that much of what I did at home could be done anywhere. Over time I actually found many serendipities in this new way of life. I now have time to think & write. I can write in my pilot on the train and upload when I get home. Maybe someday I'll get a laptop & then I'll even be able to work on my digital scrapbook layouts, too. I have time to knit or read. I've read more books and knit more sweaters in the last 18 months than I did in 10 years.

I found a new community of friends. We commuters have "train friends"-- people we see only on the train. One of these new friends, and fellow knitters, shared a rare pattern with me for my most recent sweater project. I had been looking for the pattern for years, so it was such a fortunate coincidence that she happened to have a copy of it.

I would still rather be closer to work, or even retired, so I can spend more time with my family and on my own interests, but I have found some good things about the changes I had to adjust to.

I'm glad you are able to see the positive in the situation. You make me think of "Train 48" when you say your "train friends"! haha
